Costa Rica Bird Paradise
Welcome to Costa Rica. One of our guides will meet you at the airport and drive you to your hotel in the Central Valley. Depending on the time of arrival, we may make a small tour of the city.
After a confortable night and a typical Costa Rican breakfast we will leave for San Gerardo de Dota.
Nestled in the foothills of the Talamanca Mountain Range, the small town of San Gerardo de Dota may be lacking in size, but it makes up for it in natural beauty. Travelers come here to hike through the pristine wilderness and view some of the region’s fabulous flora and fauna.
Bird watching is one reason travelers come to San Gerardo de Dota. The surrounding cloud forest is a haven for both birds and a vast variety of insect species, both of which go hand in hand. Tucked along the Savegre River Valley, near Los Quetzals National Park, countless avian species make their home. In fact, roughly 200 species flock to and from the region, including tanagers, hummingbirds, woodpeckers and the famous, resplendent quetzals.
Upon arrival at your hotel you will be greeted with a welcome cocktail, or the drink of your choice, before being shown to your room that awaits you.
The afternoon is yours to relax and familiarize yourself with the hotel facilities and trails that surround it.
After breakfast, we will begin the first bird watching tour.
Quetzal Paradise Tour
During this tour, you may see as many as 80 identified species, including the quetzal. Lasting approximately 2 hours, the biodiversity will fill your senses.
What makes this tour so world renowned is the abundant number of quetzales native to the area. You will be accompanied by one of our expert birding guides, who will assure the observation of Quetzals through the main viewing season from December to May. During this time, you will see between 20 to 25 different species after a one and a half hour trip. At the end of the tour you will take a break from the mountains and have a typical lunch in the warmest place with the warmest people on the Pan-American Highway.
After eating, you will have time to relax and admire the beautiful landscape offered by this unique and heavenly place.
You will have the afternoon to enjoy the surroundings of the hotel.
Today will be a day of great natural beauty. We will enjoy a hearty breakfast before going out.
This amazing tour in the middle of Los Santos Forest Reserve starts in the magical town Providencia of Dota where a four-wheel drive vehicle will transport you through beautiful countryside to a private farm. From here we begin our hard hike which will take us to 3 beautiful waterfalls over 20 meters high, surrounded by lush nature, with the 3rd and final waterfall hidden in the middle of the mixed tropical forest. Afterwards we will enjoy a snack before trekking back through a spectacular trail and visit a local restaurant for a delicious typical lunch and a chance to see the final 2 waterfalls of the tour.
Again, the afternoon is free to rest, relax, and learn about the facilities and many trails of the hotel.
Day 5. Cativo Beach
After breakfast you will enjoy the morning at your leisure to make even more memories, while you take in the awesome backdrop of the “Valley of the General”. After checkout at the hotel, it is time to head on to the Golfo Dulce, located on the southern coast, in waters of the Pacific Ocean. Much of the perimeter of this gulf consists of protected forest areas, such as the Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve to the West, the Piedras Blancas National Park and Corcovado National Park. These lands cover over 56,000 hectares of protected rainforest and an important marine area that is home to billfish and other species.
Day 6: Cativo Beach
Wake up to a healthy breakfast. Your day is free to relax and bird-watch, or you may choose any of a wide variety of recreational activities
Day 7: Pérez Zeledón – Cativo Beach (B, D)
